GBU – Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Wii)

Kirby's Epic Yarn

Good

  • Excellent graphical style.
  • Very co-op friendly.
  • Fun boss-fights.

Bad

  • Level design is crap until the last world (which is classic Kirby).
  • You cannot die.
  • The ‘yarn-gimmicks’ are used sparingly.

Ugly

  • “Wait… What was that Sony-game again? Little Big-somewhat? With the stitched puppet? Yeah, brilliant voice-over there! Let’s get that guy in our stitched game! Eh, he actually costs money? Crap, just grab a random British chap then…”

GBU – Metroid: Other M (Wii)

Metroid: Other M

Good

  • Fast game flow.
  • Good sense of control during normal combat.
  • Familiar and awesome “walking tank” feel at the end of the game.

Bad

  • Horrible story that’s presented just as horribly.
  • Stupid intelligence-challenging skill-unlock ‘mechanism’.
  • Aim the Wii Remote to shoot missiles.

Ugly

  • “Why don’t we lock players into a first-person view and force them to find and point out a tiny spot we deem to be important, but which is completely non-interesting to everyone else? That’s sure to gain the appreciation of players!”

An App Of Lenses

Art of Game Design: LensesDidn’t know this existed at all, but apparently Jesse Schell recreated his own Deck of Lenses (the companion to The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses) as a free Android app: Art Of Game Design: Lenses.

That’s pretty neat actually. Unless you’re carrying the deck with you on a daily basis, you’ll find you’ll often need the cards when you don’t have them available. Now it’s a matter of activating your smartphone and flipping through the selection (or choose the ‘random card’ option under menu). And I’m sorry, but there doesn’t seem to be an iOS equivalent available.

Should you also wish to convert the tome itself into a more portable format, then you can find the Kindle edition of Schell’s book over at Amazon. Be warned though; its price tag is currently still monstrous for no apparent reason.

GBU – Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Wii)

Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Good

  • Utterly gorgeous and silky smooth graphics.
  • Terrific soundtrack.
  • Delightful combat-flow.

Bad

  • Repetitive doen’t even begin to describe it.
  • And then there are two similar campaigns to work through.
  • Money/items ratio is completely unbalanced.

Ugly

  • “How about we put in a difficulty spike where you get an insanely difficult boss at around level 25? You’d need to grind an additional 25 levels just to defeat it! And we put that in the second campaign as well! We’re geniuses!”
