In case you wanted to hear me (mostly) wax lyrical about Xenoblade Chronicles in the Dutch language (I know, it’s a bit of a niche), you can do so now at Gamebites.
It’s not just me though. Other voices include Guan van Zoggel and Bastiaan Vroegop, with the entire thing being hosted by Erwin Vogelaar. And with that, I have to apologize to all English readers out there. The guttural sounds required to pronounce those names must now surely haunt your sub-conscious.

Mooi gedimd.
Er was eens… een Nederlands Nintendo magazine. Het heette N3, was opgezet door Niels ‘t Hooft en feitelijk de bron van m’n eerste schrijfklussen. Voor een artikel over Pokémon had ik een leuk idee wat half uit frustratie was geboren. Want hoewel Nintendo al jaren hun games in het Duits en Frans vertaalden, was Nederlands net een brug te ver.
Dus wat zou er gebeuren met de namen van de Pokémon als ze in het Nederlands vertaald zouden worden? Het gevolg was dus logischerwijs een lijst met 251 onofficiële Nederlandse Pokémon-namen. ‘Tis leuk om de lijst na zo’n lange tijd weer terug te lezen, vooral omdat ik sommige namen nu heel anders zou vertalen.
Overigens is de lijst gemaakt met in het achterhoofd het maximaal aantal letters voor de namen op de oorspronkelijke Game Boy. Ze zouden dus allemaal moeten ‘passen’ in Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold en Silver.
