At one point during TCOS development we created the Discipline Masters, a set of the Enclave's greatest heroes and prime examples of what to expect from the Disciplines, our class system. While they were put in the game, they never got the attention I wanted them to have, nor were all assets used. I envisioned them as a band of contemporary heroes the players could fight alongside to in specific scenes.
Marlon Kromodikoro, Dennis Zoetebier and yours truly created a bio for each of the Discipline Masters and this series is meant to showcase each of them. The game itself only contained minor bits and pieces.
Kimian the Quartehr was born into a noble family in Fountain District, Quarterstone. She never had much to wish for during her childhood and spent much of it running around the district trying to sneak into the “more dangerous” Green District housing Quarterstone's working class. During one of her ventures into the Green District, she was enthralled by some of mages at the Citadel of Ail, and decided there and then to become one herself.
When she finally reached a proper age, she joined House Rune and ventured to Rune High House at Parliament, taking up every magic class available. Eventually she discovered the differences between Ancestral and contemporary magic and based upon them continued her studies into Ancestral magic. She became an Ancestral Mage and travelled the various Shards searching for remnants of the Ancestral World and its old magic. Each journey made her powers more prominent and because of her progress she quickly became one of the major scholars.
It was near the end of her career that she was invited by her friend and colleague Amsell to join him for a new project at the Green District's Citadel of Ail. Overjoyed to be returning to her playground of old she accepted. During the project she was making good progress to be initiated into the Ashen Circle, courtesy of Amsell. Unfortunately the Arcane Surge happened and Amsell died in the events that followed. Kimian barely survived.
Heavily shaken by the experience she renounced a future position as a member of the Ashen Circle and opted for retirement (the position is still open to this very day). However, when the Enclave contacted her to become one of the Discipline Masters she felt inclined to help. Besides, moving back to Parliament would do her old heart good.
Kimian is a friendly woman who is showing her age. Yet, despite her friendly demeanour, she's quite stubborn about certain topics that concern her own field of expertise. Especially since this has always pulled her through difficult periods. She's also easily distracted by anything concerning AIOR, Levium or other DEW-reagent resources. When asked about the Arcane Surge, she can become mentally unstable, having suffered traumatic stress at the time. Under normal circumstances she's very content, regarding her time at Hawk's Eye Academy as her last great holiday.
Kimian is one of my default names for any female RPG-characters I might create in games I play. To use it for a character in Spellborn was therefore more or less a sign that the project had now gotten completely under my skin. Her role was mainly to provide a sounding board to the Arcane Surge, the devastated Green District and its boss-character Amsell. The Green District had always been weird in my opinion. Not because of its existence, but rather its location; imagine the Chernobyl incident taking place in one of New York's burroughs with everybody staying put and brushing it off. That's the Green District to me.
So for such a dramatic event, I wanted to tie in some more character. Hence Kimian and her bond with Amsell. Were they in love? Absolutely, but I wanted that to be stated implicitly to give more weight to her being selected for the Ashen Circle. Though Marlon took her design into another direction, I always envisioned her as a battle-ready Angela Lansbury, if that makes any sense.
